Quite A Mistake

I didn't watch most of the Oscars Sunday night, although it was on in the background for a while. I happened to sit down for the very end, just as Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty were walking on stage to present the Best Picture award. I was really taken by Faye Dunaway's dress.

But when Warren Beatty seemed confused as he was preparing to announce the winner, that didn't make sense to me. The rest of the presentation was a little surreal. I saw an Oscars staffer behind Jordan Horowitz, a La La Land producer, and it looked like he was literally taking the statue away from one of the winners. I even commented to Bill about how odd that was.

And then the unthinkable -- "There's a mistake. Moonlight, you guys won best picture." Dropped jaws, celebrities and friends up on their feet, shock, confusion, surprise. Keep going. It was quite the thing to see.

But for me, the take away was grace. Horowitz went on to say, loud and clear into the microphone -- "I'm going to be really proud to hand this to my friends from Moonlight".

You have to think about what it must have felt like to have the most coveted award in your industry in your hand one minute, and literally gone the next. It could not have been an easy moment. And certainly, not a moment you can plan for. I guarantee that as each of the celebrities in the room was planning their (hopeful) acceptance speeches, none planned for how to give that speech and then hand over their award to someone else.

So, to the producers and cast of La La Land, I extend my heartfelt congratulations. I haven't seen the film yet and I'm sure I will. But this congratulatory message is about showing the world how to win and how to lose and how to do both with grace and class.

PS: A special thank you to Rona for not writing this blog. I was convinced I was going to lose the topic.

Beatty seemed to realize something was amiss, but threw Faye under the bus. Accounting firm takes a big hit.

Coincidentally, I had lunch the next morning with A Wells Fargo Senior VP who had recently moved from LA. His neighbor, CEO of West Coast Price Waterhouse Coopers, and close friend in LA was the man who committed the boo boo, while "deep in conversation" with Emma Stone!

Yes the accountant made a mistake - a silly stupid mistake, but, if either Beatty or Dunaway looked at the front of the envelope, which had printed on it: "Actress in a Leading Role" they could have prevented the mistake. Then, second opportunity, when they looked inside the envelope, instead of getting confused, how about using some brains and realize it says: "Emma Stone"!! Well, no one ever said those in the acting profession are geniuses!

I guess it made for drama. I want to know the story of how Beatty received the wrong envelope

Yes. I also thought his direct handling of the situation was gracious and very effective. Must have been devastating. Can't imagine.

That happened at 12:00. While I would love for you to continue thinking that I'm such a good friend that I gave you the topic, it was just too late for me to write about it. :)

Heard on the news today that Beatty & Dunaway were bickering off-stage about WHO would announce the winner, and the errant Accountant (cool note Gideon) was busy posting Emma's photo on Twitter. So talk about mistakes because of distractions & taking your job for granted! Crazy & very memorable ending that likely leads to more viewers for both films.

The worst thing is that Moonlight didn't get its "place in the sun." So to speak. It is a filmmaker's dream, especially THAT underdog (but Brilliant) film, to hear them announce the nominees and then in front of everyone hear YOUR film called. Warren and Faye were fine. Lal la land is fine. Price Waterhouse is fine, but I feel for the Moonlight team.

Hollywood is completely out of touch with reality. Nothing makes them special. They love that people fawn all over them and from their bully pulpits during the election campaign ? You gotta be effen kidding me . The Dolby Theater could have slid into the Pacific as far as I'm concerned . Just another example of " Idiotville" gone awry . Why are we talking about this ?
