It's Smunday

Categories
Holidays

There is a large political movement underway on the internet. Surprisingly, it has nothing to do with any of President Trump’s executive orders. Rather it is an effort to declare today, the day after the Super Bowl, a national holiday; Smunday.   And, of course, as a national holiday salaried employees would have a paid day off.

The movement is being led by Heinz Corporation. The food giant -- makers of Heinz Ketchup, Oscar Mayer hot dogs, Velveeta cheese and other products – estimates that more than 16 million people call in sick the day after the Super Bowl, which costs the country about $1 billion in lost productivity. And the rest who do show up for work are just plain tired and cranky. So the food company's giving all of its salaried employees the day off today with pay.

We have an annual Super Bowl party at our house for about twenty-five people. My husband and I normally straighten up late into the night. On Monday morning we are always exhausted. As self employed workers, I am unsure whether we would take the day off but it would be nice if everyone else did and I could have a quiet workday.

Are you in favor of Smunday?

If it matters, you plan to take the vacation day.

Still think game should start no later than 4:30 p.m.

My husband agrees with you Corey about the start time. He says it every year. I have learned to try to not schedule court for the day after. I am happy to be sitting at my desk catching up on paperwork.

The high school my mother works at closes because so many kids call out sick!

I also agree with Corey on the time being earlier. Too much pre-game stuff means more high priced commercial,s means $$$, so that's not likely to happen. Having an official day off would be great as so much goes on during a typical Monday morning where I work. Had to be in a 8:00AM sharp for back to back meetings/training, yuck. Taking a personal day would mean more catching up on Tuesday, so I would never do it. Maybe if companies gave you the option to take off either Presidents day or the Monday after the Super bowl? We have that choice now the MLK or President's day, our choice. Adding the "day after" would be a nice third option for us.

I'm also self employed. If I'd absolutely had to be somewhere this morning, I would have been there; but didn't schedule anything. When I used to work for some one else, I would be where I needed to be...even if I was tired. Being tired because I chose to go stay up late is not sick and, therefore, no reason to call in sick...at least to me.

I think the NFL should pay everyones day rate for the Monday after.
Not a fan of most of it, do love the creativity of the ads.
