Uncle Joe

Last weekend was Uncle Joe's 92nd birthday. As we have for the past few years, Flo and I went down to Florida for a long weekend to see Uncle Joe and other relatives who no longer travel north. Joe is a survivor, both literally and figuratively. He survived the Warsaw Ghetto. He has had his share of loss and illness. But Joe was always a vibrant, athletic man who set an example for all of us in how to enjoy life in retirement. He has had his health issues over the years and has always bounced back. During the past year, Joe fell and was seriously disabled on one side of his body from shoulder to foot. I told Joe that he looked pretty good and was moving well -- especially given his recent fall and injury. He explained, his great enthusiasm, how he worked at regaining the use of his arm and leg. He praised his physical therapists who pushed him to do more. He confided that he knew that if he didn't do the work necessary, the disability would conquer his body. He stood up and demonstrated how he worked, worked and worked. As I was leaving, Joe asked me how I kept in shape. I told him that when I wake up in the morning, I ask myself "what would Joe do to keep in shape?" He smiled and got it. He's an inspiration.

I might add that my Uncle Joe is responsible for transporting my mother and her sisters through closed borders in Europe after they were liberated from concentration camps, bringing them to a town in Germany where they were given a home, and introducing my mother to my father who had been in the same camp as Joe... ! A hero and an amazing man.
