Maintaining Vacation Afterglow

Maintaining Vacation Afterglow

Anyone who knows me, knows that I believe that we all need to take vacations. We all work hard. For me, vacations are critical to recharge, our bodies, minds and souls.

My husband and I have recently been discussing how to maintain that sense of calmness we feel after a vacation. We have used the term vacation afterglow and discuss often how to maintain it.

For my husband, he maintains the vacation afterglow by planning the next vacation. By a day or two after we have returned, he usually is at his computer planning the next vacation.

For me, it’s about taking a piece of the culture home with me and enjoying it when I’m home. Usually that means bringing home food products that are specific to the place we travelled to.  In Singapore I purchased aged soy sauce which brings me right back to Singapore every time I cook with it. As I write this blog, I am drinking coffee we purchased in Costa Rica and, for a moment, I am right back in Costa Rica.

If you happen to run into me in the "real world," you will see that I am still wearing the yarn affirmation bracelets that were gifted to me while we were in Bali. Just wearing them makes me smile.

How do you maintain your vacation afterglow?

Interesting. My approach relies not on any traditional vacation and the permanent and disposable momentos. It could be attending a concert; see some of my blog. It can be a family or some other gathering. A song that I Iisten to. Something I read or watch. Perhaps this invites a discussion on how to approach things in general and one’s disposition.

I visualize sitting on my Key West porch and engaging with the passers by :)

We buy what falls under the category of three-dimensional objects. Small sculptures related to the local culture, carved, or assembled, from clay, of birds, local creatures.
, mirrors and such. We have a life-sized pair of ceramic dogs from Mexico. (Cost more to ship home than for the art.) I tend to watch movies that show the places we have visited to see if any look familiar or to place on a "wishful thinking" list of places to go back to. And I look at movies that take place where we want to go. Also, from our endless supply of photos. It is very easy for me to imagine being where we have been.

Just got back from one myself. The afterglow is dimming but we have photos and some items purchased. Wife just made Jerk Chicken wings using the Jerk sauce we got in Jamaica. Yum.
