A Round of Applause

I suspect this might be showing my age but here goes.

This past weekend we flew to Rochester. [Our visit there is for certain the subject of another blog.] When the plane landed, I started quietly applauding and then stopped. No one else around me was doing the same, and to be honest, Bill was even looking at me kind of funny. I always thought that applauding on landing was a way of saying thank you to the crew for an easy flight.

Anyone else out there in Gothamland remember when etiquette dictated a round of applause upon landing? Any explanations for why that practice stopped?

People still applaud after a rough flight or landing.

I still do - although I've had that experience. We also (family) hold hands on take-off and landing. I try to remember not to do this on business trips!

I do sometimes hear the applause. I can't say that I still do it myself, but remember when it was more common. Times change and so do habits.

Given the nervous flyer that I am, I always applaud. I have noticed that people do not tend to applaud anymore. It doesn't stop me, which embarrasses my kids, of course. All the more reason for me to applaud.

Not only applause - I remember my first few trips to Israel on El Al with everyone applauding and singing on landing. I guess we're all a little jaded now. Would you consider the beeps and bings as all the cell phones are powered up as applause?

I do not recall a flight that we did not offer applause. Pilots and their teams deserve that and more for delivering us safe and sound.
