A Little Something New

I am not athletic at all but I do enjoy walking. In nice weather, Bill and I walk around our neighborhood.

This weekend, we decided to change the scenery and ventured out to Trailview State Park, a section of the Greenbelt Trail. The Greenbelt Trail extends essentially across Long Island from North to South – although the little section we walked is just nearby our house.

I had no idea what to expect when we arrived at the foot of the trail. Frankly, I learned the information above only after our adventure. I was just looking for someplace new to walk.

I have to say, it was really relaxing. We walked probably 2 miles. The terrain was very different than our usual neighborhood walks but the weather was beautiful (despite tropical storm warnings), the area was so tranquil and green and the company was good.

I think we will visit again. But I need a new pair of sneakers.

When my parents lived in Jericho, before they moved to an assisted living facility, I took them for a nice walk at Trailview Park -- it reminded all of us of the hiking and camping we used to do as a family when I was a child.

Love that trail. We hike it often. Here's a trick - park one car at the Trailview entrance and then drive up to Cold Spring Harbor and park the 2nd car there. The hike from Cold Spring back to Trailview is about 6 miles - a little difficult, but if I can do it.... Word of warning - don't forget your keys! (yes, I did that the first time)

As a Queens girl hubby & I really enjoy walks through Alley Pond Park. With the remnants of the famous Motor Parkway, and many majestic trees, this very close to home park is a lovely refuge and perfect for a relaxing walk/hike. Makes us feel like we're in upstate NY!

I'm always discovering new corners of Central Park. Walking in nature is so healing.

New routes are cool. Obviously the High Line is one nice walk. I hope the Rockaway boardwalk also comes back. What still exists is what I called the bicycle path in my youth and in facts exists as a real remnant of the old Vanderbilt Motor Parkway that runs from Queens Village through Bayside and Hollis Hills to Fresh Meadows in Queens. And many interesting paths exist in the back of Alley Pond Park in Queens.
