It's About Friendship

This blog is not about politics. This blog is about friendship.

I like to follow-just out of personal interest-the decisions of the United States Supreme Court. I was really shocked to read, in many of the articles about the sudden death of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia,  that he maintained a close personal friendship with fellow Justice Ruth Bader-Ginsberg. Anyone who follows the Supreme Court knows that these two justices are as far apart on almost any issue as two people can be; with him being the conservative and she being the liberal.

I wonder what the two of them would talk about away from the Court. And whether their vast differences of opinion would impact their discussions. In other words, what sort of personal qualities does one have to possess in order to maintain a friendship with someone who sees the world so differently than you?

Aside from other interests they shared a love of Opera, however their friendships speaks volumes about the civility and professionalism that exists within our profession. Although we can argue strongly in the courtroom that should not prevent us from recognizing all of the wonderful attributes our opposing counsel have to offer. If you read the words written by Ruth Bader-Ginsberg regarding Justice Scalia after his passing she speaks eloquently about the positive impact he had on her decisions. Her eloquence and graciousness are a wonderful lesson for us all.

John Buscarello posted a 538 blog analysis that Scalia was trending less conservative over time. There is a borough president who when we were council aides used to say he is so far right and me so far left that we stand next to each other. We still get along. I also maintain relations with folks in the GOP.

A lesson to live by. I heard Scalia interviewed and comment that his analysis was always about ideas and his attacks never personal.

We are all one. I wish I could always remember that.
