6 years.

A Spanish man was fined after his employer discovered that he had been absent from work for six years without notifying anyone.

The employers at a water company in Spain believed that Joaquin Garcia, 69-years-old, was being supervised by local authorities while the deputy mayor thought the opposite to be true. Local newspapers have given Garcia the nickname "el funcionario fantasma" or "the phantom official."

Garcia said a combination of office bullying related to his family's politics and a lack of work for him to do at the water company caused his extended absence. He did not report these condition for fear of losing his job.

I wonder what the fine was...

I'd have died long ago from anxiety, with each day longer increasing the weight of being found out along with nothing to do.

A fascinating tautology. I, too, wonder what the fine was. Sounds like it was worth his while. Sounds a little like american government Fed, State and local.

Not perhaps too different from the folks who collect overtime at a level that no time to sleep, eat and other routine functions.

There's a famous matrimonial case where the husband was working for New York State and, simultaneously, was holding another full time position. No one knew. Sort of the opposite of what you present here but not less disconcerting.
