Time and Loss

Time, Rickman, Bowie, Frey, Mortality

With the recent spate of deaths; Bowie, Rickman, Margulies, Frey, and now I've just heard of Bowie's drummer Griffin, founding member of Mott the Hoople,  passed away on Monday, I find myself getting melancholy. I know that as we get older, time moves faster and statistically more deaths occur. Also, as I become more and more present and conscious, I am more aware of mortality.

Sandy Denny, talented British composer and folksinger, wrote a beautiful song that I find soothing:

Who Knows Where the Time Goes?

Across the evening sky all the birds are leaving
But how can they know it's time for them to go?
Before the winter fire, I will still be dreaming
I have no thought of time

For who knows where the time goes?
Who knows where the time goes?

Sad deserted shore, your fickle friends are leaving
Ah, but then you know it's time for them to go
But I will still be here, I have no thought of leaving
I do not count the time

For who knows where the time goes?
Who knows where the time goes?

There are many great versions, from Nina Simone to Judy Collins, but I love her version with Fairport convention: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5sNPorNyME0

If you need soothing it could help.

What soothes you when life gets blue?

It's been a rough season for rock stars. Though on the other hand, they're not ODing...

You know my Lynney was a drummer so I wonder if the big guys are letting her play in the rock n roll band in the sky. So glad for the legacy they all have left us!!!

I've been watching old music videos on line, especially Dancing in the Streets. So 80's and they are both obviously having so much fun.

As some of my faves passed seven decades I often fret about passing on seeing them. One is coming back to NYC on a certain night in June which presents a certain scheduling issue for me (Norm knows). Mrs. B. just says they are getting old. I reply if they can still play and sing, why not enjoy. Sometimes I may not know someone's importance, for example Lemmie of Motorhead. Reading about him after the past made me appreciate the musician and person even if the music remains something never to make my rather diverse and vast collection. On the other hand, reading the Frey obits, I knew many inaccuracies and omissions, including the key influence of a certain band formed from the ashes of the Buffalo Springfield in the creation of the Eagles (and I am not talking its supply of bass players who sang lead the three biggest selling Eagles singles -- Take It To The Limit; I Can't Tell You Why; and Love Will Keep You Alive). Frey in radio and media interviews credited my fave band. Indeed he watched in in rehearsals at Richie Furay's home in Laurel Canyon and when the original five piece band played the Troubadour.

I know she is. Hope Keith Moon isn't giving her too much trouble...

Listen, Zelig, I wouldn't be surprised to find a picture of you with Bowie, Rickman, and Frey. Give Raul and Fidel our very best.
