Jeremy PhD

When I was a teenager, I printed business cards for myself and my best friend that said "Nachas Machers". (My father was a printer so I had access to my own little letterpress printing press.)

It was important for me to give my parents “Nachas” -- that special warm pride that only a child can give to his or her parents. Parents get Nachas from their kids. In my world as a child, Nachas was the only thing I could give my parents that no-one else could. Nachas is just that special.

So it was this week when Flo and I, as parents, “schepped” Nachas from our son Jeremy when he successfully presented and defended his doctoral dissertation and walked into the room where Flo and I anxiously waited. The smile on Jeremy's face and the pride in his stride broadcast the initials “PhD” now after his name.

Someday may he enjoy the Nachas that he gave us.

Dear Ben,

You are entitled to bursting your buttons with pride!! That's quite an accomplishment, really. As my Sephardic friends would say, "Ma'ah bruk!", which roughly translates to "good luck."

What's your son's field of study?

Congrats to Jeremy and the whole family! What an exciting moment to be in on.
What a beautiful way for you and Flo to start the New Year.

It was cool you could be there. Congrats again. Looking forward to congratulating Jeremy in person. I recall Jonathan's call after he got told following his presentation. We felt it again at the graduation and then again when the diploma arrived.
