It Smells Like Home

As I’m writing this blog, I have chicken soup simmering on the stove. My kitchen is filled with the wonderful comforting smell of the soup. As I smell the soup, I can’t help but think about my parents and watching my mother cook in our kitchen for Rosh Hashanah.

Certain smells, like chicken soup for me, can instantly evoke memories or bring us comfort. The smell of hot tea still reminds me of my college roommate who would leave her cup of tea steeping for what seemed like hours in our dorm room until it reached the perfect strength and temperature for her.

What scent evokes memories for you? L’shana tova Gotham to all whom celebrate!!!

Shana tova. For me it was the onions in the baked matvah ball grandma made and no one to this date duplicated (though my aunt tried). For several days my home enjoyed the aroma of brisket and kasha varnisckes (with onions of course) in advance of our first night hosting (In fact Shelly decided we needed more brisket and that required a foray before I headed to the pool (extended one more weekend) to the butcher.

Onions sauteeing in butter, will always remind me of my dear Mother...

Yes, brisket. But ever since my cousin married a Texan many years ago, we've ordered it barbecued, Texas style! With apologies to my ancestors, the Texas product is vastly superior... And depending upon how you count, I think we're now majority Protestant!
