We Are Off Again

Last year, you all indulged me for months and I was very grateful. You know what I am talking about. Those of you who listened to me obsess about sending my oldest off to college for the first time deserved a special thank you.

I thought I would reflect upon where I sit a year later – oddly, in the same place. As we get ready to pack the car and take our daughter up to school to start her second year, I find myself in the same place I was a year ago. Well, perhaps not exactly the same place. The shopping and packing frenzy has had no stress this year and that has been a gift.

But this feeling that a part of me is about to be surgically removed is just exactly as it was last year. Yes, I know it is all fine and it will be a great school year and all of those good things. That said, I am caught by surprise by this feeling reminiscent of a year ago. I thought for sure I had survived and it would not return. I was very very wrong.

Wishing all of our returning students a wonderful school year and all of their parents the strength of their emotions over the next week as they all return to school.

PS, sending our children off to school seems to be the blog theme for the week. Seriously, I did not read Rona’s blog before writing my own!

Always an interest road trip. But what made it more interesting was meeting the roommates and the parents. For me key was figuring out where to park to make unloading most efficient. Lacking elevators and needing to lug fridges always made things "interesting."

I am sadder this year - don't know why - maybe because 2 are leaving - or maybe because this summer flew and everyone was doing their own thing - happy for a 3 day family excursion before the first drop-off - and even gladder that you and I can cry on each other's shoulders in Mystic!

Nancy it doesn't really get easier but when they have their own car they leave you at your door step and they take care of it themselves. My youngest really moved away (Boulder) as what i see as his new home (Not for school just as a place to live and race). That happened in December and i haven't recovered even a little bit. It hurts everyday and i am just waiting for it to start to ease.

Thank you all for the premature freak out. My son is entering Senior year in high school in September. This Thursday, we are headed to Boston to tour some colleges. And I am already hyperventilating. :(

Wistful is the word I'd use. Our eldest, 23, is moving out of the house to an apartment just off Washington Square. She can't wait to go, and her brother goes off to Boston for his senior year. He, too, says he's going to get an apartment in the City. Maybe he'll share with his sister! At least Caroline (15) is still with us...

Seems like it all happened so quickly.
