Mr. Met?

During the recent exciting run for the Pennant by the Mets I posted the above photo and caption on the Gotham Sports Talk listserve and on Facebook. Inasmuch as most everyone knows me as a Yankee fan who proudly wears a Yankee hat it may have appeared to be hypocritical or front running, but, as they say, not at all.

I was there as a fan at the Mets 1962 birth as an expansion team and I suffered along with former Yankee Manager Casey Stangel in their 120 game loss rookie year.

Such a fan that in 1964 artist wife Joanne and myself won the initial Shea Stadium Banner day with "We Cry Harder Because We're Number 10". Our winning entry can be seen below on our Wall.

Yes, at our September 18 Gotham Yankee Mets night at Citi Field I wore my Yankee hat and suffered as the Yankees lost that night. However, the Mets have always been my second favorite team and they are representing New York City in style. Thus, I feel that I am entitled to sport a Mets cap.  Especially so since I took both my sons regularly to Shea Stadium in their boyhood to see the Mets and they became dyed in the wool Met fans along with their sons.

Let's go Mets, only 4 more wins before we win the World Series!

Also, I caught my only foul ball at Shea (off the bat of Felix Millan) in 1976.

We welcome you to the church of Yankees Fans for Mets! It opened a bustle later than Labor Day but it remains open. Anyone else joining.

I'm with you. I have always rooted for the Mets as my primary team. However, when they have been out of the race (way too often, of course), my second favorite team has always been the Yankees. I never fully understood why most people feel that this is not allowed. My feeling has always been that so long as you root against the Red Sox you are a true New Yorker.

I accept that and welcome you as a True New York Sports Fan. My first Met game was actually at the Polo Grounds to see the Mets play the Houston Colt 45's. My mother took my brother and I because she thought the Mets had a chance to win against them. LOL

Very well written Fred, lets hear it for "Yankee fans for Mets", not turncoats.

Fred: I'm 100% with you. Where is it written that Yankee fans can't also be Met fans? Sure, if the Yankees are "in it", I'm going to root for them. But if they aren't (and they aren't, are they), then I root for my second favorite team.

In my view, I am first and foremost a New Yorker (5th or 6th generation, I'm told). Let's Go Mets!!

I'm with you, Fred! I'm a Yankee fan. I'm also a New Yorker through and through. The only time I root against the Mets is when they are playing a subway series game against the Yankees. So why can't I join in the excitement and be proud of the NY Mets, like everyone else? Is it ever wrong to be supportive and happy for someone? Moreover, the Mets have played some great baseball this season. It's been fun to watch.
So I too say, let's go Mets!!!

I'm a New Yawka! Only 4 other cites are lucky enough to have 2 Major League Baseball teams. Let's Go Mets!

I was there for the final game in 69 and the 6th game in 86 the METS can do it again.
LETS GO METS.

I think the term my Mom would use would be "frontrunner???"

Go NY is my sports mantra for all sports. Loving the bitter,
hostile, and MY team only fans can be tough.

The high road well travelled. When you think about it, good karma to have the Mets lift your spirits in a year when the Yankees fell short.

I admire your non biased open mindedness. I was such a spoiled Yankees fan there was no room in my world for pretenders to the throne. I sacrificed the fun of having a brand new National League team in NewYork because I was a spoiled Yankees fan . Besides the National League was the enemy . I couldn't get on board and lost out on all the fun. Little did I know that in 1969 the Yanks would finish 28.5 games out of first place. The Metropolitans (tacky name ) rule but they don't wear the pinstripes of the hallowed ground. Daniel. Murphy ain't no Iron Horse !
