The Demise of Old Reliable

We have two "land-line" phones in our house. Originally, they were both through Verizon, a traditional telephone provider that traces itself to the break-up of the old AT&T. Years ago, we changed one of the lines to our cable provider and bundled it with Internet and cable TV. But we kept the traditional Verizon line.
It was a good thing. During Superstorm Sandy, when we lost power for twelve days, the Verizon line worked and I was able to use an old "princess" phone that took its power from the phone line.
Sadly, our Verizon line is dying. It's a natural death. Old age. There has been a buzz in the line for several months. We have complained to Verizon and been visited by many service people attempting to fix the annoying background noise. Recently, we heard the sad news. The old copper wire telephone lines are corroding and will not be replaced. The only option will be the fiber-optic cable line that brings us cable TV and Internet.
I read recently that between twenty-five and thirty percent of households use cell phones exclusively. The way of the future?

I'm holding onto my landline as long as possible - - Happily Verizon hasn't tried to change the wiring in my building yet - but the Building's Board wants them to - - I say NOOO!!! I want to keep my landline!!!

For me it's not just the landline vs internet-- What I miss---about not using using a "family/house phone:
1. Being able to "meet" my kids friends through a "house" phone. Getting to know them and their families.
There is no barrier for instant communication, even for elementary school kids. Think FB, Face Time, Instagram, OOvo, KIK and Skype. I seriously cannot believe that I have a 10 year old that does all of the above with ALL of her friends--
2. I miss being able to slam down my phone and not fearing that it would shatter into a thousand pieces. :)
I certainly did not stress about charging it, dropping it, losing it...Yes, old reliable is the perfect description.

We are holding onto that landline. And, we actually switched a few months everything to Verizon. My husband says the internet speed is much much faster. Although, I think he really made the switch to get NFL network and Redzone.

You can always buy a carrier pigeon in case of emergency. Time marches on. We all have to adapt. I can tell you I wish I had a horse and buggy after Sandy to avoid those gas lines.

I believe in redundancy. Have triple play with one line. My line is Verizon - same reason as you. The line was upgraded to FIOs quality which should allow a legit price war for me between Timewarner and Verizon if I so wish. There are dead zones in the home in terms of the cells.
The Verizon line has been with me since I was 4 so if I ever switch modes i'll keep the 6779 #.
