Chocolate

An article in the New York Times last week was about a study that showed that chocolate can improve memory.   There is something about flavenol, an antioxidant, especially epicatechin, that does something good to your brain.  The study did not mention, however, that it also does something bad to your stomach.

They know about the improved memory because they tested this on mice and snails.  After ingesting packets of M&Ms, they were able to remember what they ate for breakfast, but when asked what they did last Saturday night they did not answer, proving that they could not recall.

The study was paid for in part by the Mars Company, which likes to sell a lot of chocolate.  That has to make your wonder about the results.  Kind of like trusting General Motors to do a test on ignition switches.  Still, this is enough to convince me that Woody Allen was right.  At least when it comes to mice and snails.

Always wondered about my ability to recall things. I like chocolate in many Forms and configurations but not as cake (though as fudge icing on vanilla or yellow cake just delightful. Al Kooper titled an album, White Chocolate. Here's one of its tunes: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uW7w6zDMpZ0

Thanks Fred, I guess that is my nickname, I'm a chocolate sommelier and owner of Exotic Chocolate Tasting. I read the NY Times article and posted it on my FB page. Its been reported though research for many years, that chocolate does improve memory and helps with depression. However, the article failed to mention, that you will not reap these benefits by eating candy (defined as sugar as the first ingredient). Real chocolate has cacao as the first ingredient where there are many health benefits.

Real white chocolate is pressed from the cacao bean, like olive oil is extracted from olives. Most white chocolate in stores is cheap, processed with chemicals, that's why consumers don't think it comes from cacao.

Analyzing chocolate is not the way to enjoy one of the most dear moments in life, the delicious reaction of a good ol’ chocolate bar or cake or whatever. I certainly do remember when I have experienced that. So, it must help one’s memory.
