Obsessions

When I was young I had
no direction and wondered aimlessly and accomplished little.

I can't pinpoint the moment in time when my self hatred overwhelmed my sloth, but there was a metamorphosis as I got into sports and athletics. I learned about training and getting into shape as a competitive necessity.

Then the running boom arrived and I became a runner and through trial and error became a pretty good marathoner as I piled up the necessary training miles. And then it was the need to run every day and then it was a nearly 2 year running streak of at least 2 miles/day.  In the end, I ran 55,000 miles (over twice around the World) and broke down. I would "joke" that if I was a car with 55,000 miles on my odometer, I would trade me in.

In fact, I traded running for swimming.

Now it is swimming every day and today is my 97th straight day of swimming a half mile. My personal record is 140 straight days of such swimming.

Can you  relate to any of this?

My son just recently turned 13 and has matured literally overnight. He is a completely different person than who ended last school year. He has committed himself to working out every night before he goes to bed. I couldn't be more proud...now to join him.

Yes
not all of it relates to athletics.
But there have been swimming milestones
But also ones relating to concerts (Surprised?)
And of course making a difference - almost every day.

I cannot relate to what posses you. My question is....could you have made a different turn and went the wrong way? So easy for that to happen. Teamwork and your strong desire set you apart. Bravo!!
I wonder what you were like in the courtroom!

Now that Bud Selig is leaving his post thank God can we please get Pete Rose into the HOF ? Sorry.......I'm obsessed. Many of my childhood dreams for myself were never realized because ? I was a " skinny" kid ! I hate the word " skinny ! " I coulda been a contender ! So.......I ran , which made me skinnier ! Girls liked me but only as a " friend ! " I coulda been an NFL wide receiver ! Del Shofner and Homer Jones couldn't hold a candle to my skills . I wanted to replace Hank Bauer in right field ! I had a gun ! Too " skinny " . Woman thought that because I was skinny that my penis might also be skinny. I hated the word. So I decided after watching Pumping Iron the Schwarzenegger cult film that I was going to kick ass in the gym and get really fucking BIG ! This was 1977 ! I was 33 years old and it changed my life. I had already done a tour in the Navy and was an airline pilot for a decade for a major carrier . Go figure . So I got BIG ! I was obsessed with the gym . I went from 170 pounds to 220 pounds at 6' 2" ! Arnold and Joe Weider would be proud . Benching 315 pounds . Curls for the girls. Protein and amino acids. So.....As you know Fred I just turned 70 . I'm in the gym every day . Lifting and swimming . Swimming and lifting . Proving to myself over and over that nobody can ever call me " SKINNY " ever again !

Self-hatred? You?? Why would you do that to yourself? You have the world by the tail.

Wish I could be as dedicated to exercise as you are. Sure, I work out with a trainer every Saturday morning for 90 minutes, and one of my business partners and I take walks around Stamford for an hour several days a week (weather permitting). But I need to do more.

Once upon a time, I was there with you, close, but never as possessed. Now, thankfully, I am cured -- if "cured" means feeling guilty when I miss the gym.

Well, Fred, I (my conscious self) am certainly not obsessed with physical exercise. I do know, however, that every time I begin an exercise program, my body becomes obsessed with the need to stretch/move/ease the soreness from the last session. And that feels good and keeps me going for a while. Then I get distracted....and slack off.

If this post is about obsessions other than exercise, then I think I am more obsessed with my clients' success. No kidding--when I see their businesses succeeding, or see them making a breakthrough in their own thinking or business behavior, I just want more of the rush that gives me as well as them.

Now if that would only translate to a burning desire to hit the Pilates mat!

Hi Fred, I didn't know you were swimming regularly. Sounds like you beat up your knees with all that long distance running. Running is not good for older guys. A good aerobic walking program much better idea. I am definitely addicted to exercise and do so regularly. Add a little weight training to your exercise program. Light weights with lots of reps and done with the correct form. We have pretty good genes on our side but in my opinion the MOST important thing is to eat good quality unprocessed food the majority of the time. Lots of antioxidant type foods should be consumed. Also, pray that we are fortunate enough to avoid getting cancer of some type. Anyway, keep up the good work and stay in touch.
