The final blog on happiness

IMHO most people tend to dwell on negative issues. They complain about the weather, business, food...whatever. News outlets use bad news as a method to gain viewers and readers. In fact, the ratio of bad news to good news on a typcial broadcast can be as much as 17 to 1.

I know that people seem to discount joy and happiness. They choose to push it aside after they experience it. Maybe they don't feel they deserve it. Maybe because true happiness and joy seems fleeting. It happens in a moment and then the moment is gone.

Life is too short to dwell on negative feelings. Why not live on happiness?

Try this right now...think about something good that happened to you over the past week. Could be a hug, a conversation, winning, getting a new account...whatever. Now close your eyes and, breath deeply and put yourself back into that time and place and live those feelings again. Feels good doesn't it? You probably were smiling to yourself. I do this just about every day.

As I close this week on blogging happiness, I humbly suggest that each of use can choose to be happy. Relive those joyful moments in our lives...because we can.

I was very happy when I learned that Jefferson will throw out the first pitch at Citi Field on 911. Be there!

Everyone has their cross to bear. No one gets through life unscathed.
That said, some people carry their little cross on the gold chain around their neck, while others drag their 10 ton cross behind them, making every decision based on how the weight that the world has bestowed upon them will effect the lives of their family, their business, and themselves.
While some are devastated because it rained on their BBQ, others deal with issues such as:
Will my wife recover from breast cancer?
How do I support my family now that my husband suddenly died?
Will my children grow up to be independent? Or must I care for them for the rest of their lives?

Whatever life throws at you, the ONLY question is: WHAT AM I GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?

Fight back. Push through. And CHOOSE TO BE HAPPY. I'm the first to admit, it ain't easy. We will all have our share of pity parties. But when it really comes down to it, what other choice do we really have?

You are as happy as you choose to be. Happiness is a choice. A willingness to see good and value where possible. My children's father is in Hospice. My daughter cried that he had a crappy life with nothing to love for or show of it. This is a man who is mentally ill and the drugs that stabilize him are destroying his body. A horrible choice that most of us never have to deal with. I guided my daughter first that he had long periods of genuine happiness and productivity. I guided her that he brought forward two amazing women and that in itself was great. I also guided her to live life as normal but simply let anyone depending upon her for essential plans that she may have to skip out at a moments notice. How we chose to approach our difficulties or our triumphs is still a choice. No one can take it from us or shift our minds but us. Our past experiences don't define our future or ourselves. We define it and ask others to follow it.

I pass on reading the bad news unless I need to. But even in the bad news you can make some better things happen; even with the bad that id not impact you directly, opportunities exist to do some good. I know if I step back and create a worksheet the good/fun/happiness column will "enjoy" many more entries that that alternative one. It was mentioned to me as I draft this how the weather may not be all that nice (perhaps as in its not a Beach Day); I replied still dry enough to play ball and swim; and I already enjoyed reading two and most of a third papers out back this morning, as I finished my morning brew.
Here's a good approach take every day as it is: "A Brand New Day"

I'm taking my daughter back up to school today. It doesn't get easier. But I keep thinking back to the other night when we watched television together and she laid on my lap like she did when she was young.
