Changing The Past

Last week Thomas Berger, most famous for his novel  "Little Big Man", died at the age of 89.  While reading his obituary I was intrigued by another oh his books entitled "Changing The Past" (1989) In which a man gets to go back in time to the forks in his road and take the other path.

Wow, what a concept!

What would you do? I must admit that I am at wits end to think of anything I would've done differently.

This is much too thought provoking for a Friday in the summer. Indeed, it is the stuff of which fiction is made.

Fred, do I have to remind you about that little incident during the Truman administration?

If i had taken the other fork, I wouldn't have my wonderful husband and wonderful son...so...no ...I guess I wouldn't do it differently...

Wouldn't change a thing.

How amazing would it be if Jule could arrange a book club session with him? How is she at seances? :)

in the words of Yogi Berra. When you com to a fork in the road, take it.

Very thought provoking....Is anonymous above talking about Truman removing McArthur from office in 1951 ? That error in judgement was huge. But to cut to the chase. We've touched on this in the past....Our mistakes and the possibility of do overs. But our mistakes are what make us who we are....So....The Road Less Traveled puts us where? To ask the same questions down that road anyway !! I don't see my animals having these kinds of thoughts. The birds. The deer. The Mountain Lions. They are living in the now. I've told you before that I am trying to live in the now. The present. So as I lie in the meadow looking up at the stars I'm not thinking about yesterday or tomorrow but of now. Am I hungry ? Am I tired ? Am I cold ? Are my loved ones safe ? I'm NOT thinking of woulda, coulda, and shoulda !! I watch my dogs listen to every night sound and smell every fragrance in the mountains. Alert, Fit and loved. That's all I want. Homo Sapien has evolved without paying it forward. Maybe if I could change anything it would be to eliminate man kind as we know it.

Interesting topic, pretty much only one major mistake, and I am not allowed to talk about it.

If I did any different which I might have wanted to do, and there were only one a handful, the major event route change might have meant I'd never meet Shelly so I do not even dwell on that "situation". The only other things were more strategic and I cannot even be sure the "corrections" if made would have delivered a final result change that mattered.

What a great topic! At this point in my life, I wish that I had chosen my
Major in college sooner... It would have saved me a lot of heartache

Great question! I probably would have completed a Ph.D. in philosophy, instead of leaving the program after a year and a half. Perhaps had I gone to Vanderbilt instead of UCSD, I might have stayed. Alas, the lure of Southern California was too much for this Queens boy to resist.
