Dining Italian Style

Well, Uraguay advanced to the knockout round of 16 in the World Cup.  That's the good news.

The bad news is that their star player was guilty for at least the second time of actually biting an opponent.  Yes that's right , Luis Suarez one of their star players (what appears to be essentially out of nowhere) bit an Italian player in the shoulder.

I know as Americans we love to win, often it seems like we'd do anything to win.  I honestly believe that if an American did that (especially for a second time), he would be kicked off the team and banned for life.

For a country like Uraguay, this could be their biggest sporting event.  What do you think?  Should he be banned by his own team even before the league decides to rule?

Is there a saying that "Every player is entitled to one bite"?

Tyson was disqualified. I don't remember if he was actually suspended for any length of time. While I obviously don't condone Tyson's actions, I think there has to be a differentiation in the mind set between a guy who is getting his head pounded in and is literally fighting for his life and a soccer player who can go down if he is injured, call time out, get substituted for, etc. This is the second time this has happened. Tough to blame this on the intensity of the moment.

In America, that would probably depend on whether he was a star player or not. Very talented athletes seem to get more "bites" than their less talented counterparts.

Since Suarez is a star player for that team, I doubt they will punish him even though he has a negative history. FIFA may suspend him for the next game.

I don't know that I agree. You're absolutely right about star treatment, but I think there is a line. Maybe it's just me (and yes I did play soccer all the way up through varsity) but I think this is such an egregious act that the Uraguay team should remove him from the tournament. I think the USA, in the exact same circumstances would do the same and I think the American soccer fans would be humiliated by it.

Spelling correction: It's not "Uraguay" It's "Uruguay". I used to live there back in another lifetime, and we spend Christmas and New Year's there at my mother-in-law's beach house every year.
