Where were you

Categories
Holidays

There aren't many things in life where everyone can remember where they were when it happened.  I know that I had been bartending that night but it was slow so I went home.  Started watching it at the bar and when I got home, I was shuffling back and forth between coverage and the Knicks playoff game.

For the Kardashians, it sent their lives down a path of infamy.

Anybodu know whatever happened to Al Cowlings?

Where were you twenty years ago today, June 17, 1994?

I was chatting online, tying up the home phone line. Ever since, the world has been catching up.

I was working at North Shore University Hospital and probably visiting my parents at their home to wish them a happy 38th anniversary!

Wow. So not my thing. Just didn't care, still don't.
11/22/63. 9/11/01. Those are important dates.
Ester Horowitz

Wasn't worth the coverage it got. I was celebrating a birthday.

I was working that day as it was a Friday. I was heading up Marketing for Villeroy & Boch U.S. and in addition, managing the company's "first quality" stores. Outlets were just coming onto the horizon and I was expanding Villeroy & Boch's marketing presence in the United States! I was also juggling family as we have two daughters who at the time were 5 an 3 years of age. I'm trying to remember if there were any "earth shaking" news events that day... Nothing compared to 11/22/63 or 9/11/01...

I was a stay at home mommy with my-then-three year old. I kept trying to sneak peeks at it on my kitchen television while trying to keep my daughter occupied watching Barney on the den television.

I vaguely remember the slow motion car chase on the television. Most likely at our first house on Drake Road; my wife was five months pregnant with our son. I have to say that I didn't much care about the "trial of the century" then, and I still don't. But there's no doubt in my mind that he was guilty of the double murder of his wife and some other guy whose name I don't remember.

Totally not an important historical date - although you could argue it was the birthdate of "reality tv".

I do remember where I was -- shooting pool, drinking beer, hanging out with a really cute girl and watching the Knicks game -- a happy go lucky 28 year old -- those were the days!

I think some are confusing the concept of important and memorable. Some may find it irrelevant, yet they still remember what they were doing. I think because it was a distasteful event that had a significantly negative affect on the media, some don't want to acknowledge its social relevance. I think because of how bad "reality TV" has gotten and today's negative perception of OJ, many have lost perspective on the scope of the event.

People forget that OJ Simpson was loved and revered by almost everyone in this country. While it turned into a media circus, and today's celebrities are viewed with disdain, OJ Simpson was a popular figure that transcended both race (black and white) and culture (sports and Hollywood). What made this such a real event was both its shock value and the overnight crumbling of an American icon.
