Good For You

It seems that there is always a current “what we thought was good for you, isn't”. Something that was considered healthy and even recommended, suddenly falls out of favor.

Low dose aspirin. Take one a day. Now, not so good for you. Don't take low dose aspirin. Talk to your doctor.

Coffee. Doesn't count toward your necessary daily fluid consumption. Now it does.

Caffeine? --- I’m not sure what the latest is.

Chocolate? Good for you, but stay away from milk chocolate. Or did I hear that even milk chocolate is good for you?

...and every one of these claims is backed by the “latest scientific research”.

Now that's certainly reassuring!

How about "healthy whole grains," the Staff of Life? Take a look at Dr. David Perlmutter's book, "Grain Brain" for a startle.
I'm sticking to dark chocolate!

High Protein low carb diets. Lose the weight today, have Kidney stone issues later. Who knows for sure? I say eat what makes you happy (in moderation) and you will likely live a less stressful, longer life.

Let's just recall Aristotle's Golden Mean. Everything in moderation. Then we can just try to define what constitute's moderation. Perhaps to each her/his/their own......

There was a time when I joked that scientists would find that SEX causes cancer! Then the AIDS epidemic broke out...nothing is good for you or bad for you - just enjoy life

For most of my life, the doctors urged everyone to eschew saturated fats. So we ate lots of fish, chicken and veggies, and ate very little red meat, cheese and even seafood for forty years.

Of course, those proscriptions turned out to be bad science; the USDA was apparently duped into embracing the findings of one very charismatic researcher. I find this to be extremely disturbing.

Now the enemy is carbs and highly processed foods. Next thing we'll be told is that carbs are great and Slim Jims are the new quinoa... I'll take my New York Strip medium rare, please.
