My Colgate Boys

Categories
Baby Blogs

Most everyone knows I went to Syracuse. However, a little known fact is that two of the most significant people in my life graduated neighboring Colgate University (as did International Breakfast Group Chair Lucas Meyer and my best friend Dr. David Berger).

They are Andrew Zelman, my "Super Lawyer"  partner and friend for 41 years and David Klein, my law partner for 14 years and first born son of 45 years.

Andy is retiring to enjoy the good life, reading, writing
and golfing, while David took his half of our law firm, specializing in Communication and Internet law, and formed, effective 12/1, a new firm, Klein Moynihan and Turco LLP.

While I am happy for Andy and proud of David I would not be Human if I did not despair that my Colgate boys are leaving.

Life goes on and I am optimistic as to the future for Klein Zelman Rothermel and the Klein family, but I can't help feeling a sense of passages and loss.

Glenn Tilbrook (solo of Squeeze) - Where I Can Be Your Friend
The Beatles or Joe Cocker - With A Little Help From My Friends

Fred, I congratulate you for riding through these major events and staying on the stallion! Having worked for you, and Andy, and your firm for 41 years, and watching David grow up from childhood, the poignancy of this time is palpable to me too.

I agree with your perspectives on Andy's and David's new lives -- both worked hard to reach where they are now, and David will be a star in his chosen field. I remember so many years ago when you and Andy called a few of us together to invite us to your new firm and cautioned, "We don't have even a pencil." And then you both and Joan Rothermel developed an awesome team that just keeps getting better.

Without Andy, and David, the firm has changed, no doubt. But now we have plenty of pencils, an established law firm and a fabulous future!

Does Colgate ever play Syracuse? Is that a conflict for you? :)

It has to help a little that your lost relationships are a direct result of your greatest successes. :)
