Zelig

Entertainment Blogs

Upon the passing of Lou Reed this week I mentioned that I knew him and he had played my fraternity party in Roslyn on New Year's Eve December 31, 1962.  This inspired Cayce Crown to nickname me Zelig. She references Woody Allen's Leonard Zelig a nondescript enigma who pops up everywhere.

I don't know if I can live up to Zelig's ubiquity, but I have happened upon and known a number of famous people: Michael Crichton, Michael Phillips (And wife Julia), Chris Miller (writer of Animal House), Stan Isaacs, Dave Bing, John Mackey, Ernie Davis, Marv Albert, Peter Hyams, Hal Krents, Sal Messina, Lisa Robinson, Betsy Johnson, Donald Schupak, Peter Guber, Billie Hunter, Marty Bandier, Charles Koppleman, Melinda Blau, Steve Rubell, Judge Howard Goldfluss, Anahad O'Connor, Michael G. Wilson, Linda Rodin, Bob Tarlow, Ray Dearie, Ken Aretsky, many Famous Friars and Charcoal.

What famous person or persons have you known?

Fred, of your group, I have met and worked with you, Hal Krents, Mike Wilson, and Ray Dearie, and know Donald Schupak, Ken Aretsky and met Judge Howard Goldfluss and his wife. I also know and work with Gotham Co-Founder Nancy Schess and other lawyers famous in their fields, many Gotham members; Artists Joanne Klein and Alex Klein, and many people who are famous in the worlds of antique bottle collecting and dog license tag collecting. "Swifty" Lazar is my cousin ( he got his moniker from Bogie). When I stayed at his house he took me to a dinner party at Billy Wilder's! Too bad I was a teenager and didn't even realize who Billy Wilder was! Never was invited to Spago's for the Academy Awards party!

I drove Phil Jackson to a Bill Bradley campaign event the day Jackson was named coach of the Lakers (the first time), and I also met John Wooden and Anne Meyers at that event. I had dinner with George Plimpton in law school -- one of the most interesting evenings ever.
Phyllis Dubrow

From high school: Marsha Hunt, whose daughter is Mick Jagger's 1st born. Big Arnold, when he was only Mr. Universe and endorsing nutritional supplements and before acting classes. And politics. And my father's cousin Evelyn, who was a lobbyist for ILGWU for nearly 50 years and was given a Presidential Medal of Freedom by Bill Clinton. Thanks for asking. ...

Of course you Fred ! But I have been fortunate to be around many celebs and important people. My latest and last boss after I retired from American Airlines was Neil Armstrong. He actually hired me after a long interview alone in his office. When he gives you a check ride on an airplane that he owns and has entrusted you to fly....Uhhh...Awesome !! I spent a week with Mikhail Gorbachev eating and drinking vodka...Michelle Pfeiffer lives down the road with her hubby David Kelley....Steve Wozniak, Neil Young and Joe Montana live on ranches next to mine. I've known Joe DiMaggio and Bob Costas. I flew Mitt Romney and his wife exclusively during his campaign...Sarah Jessica Parker and hubby Matthew Broderick....Tim McGraw and Faith Hill had me to their house in the Caribbean for Thanksgiving last year.....Of course these are all owners and clients of my boss...but when you spend a week or more flying them you get to develop relationships...I was Bob Dylan's personal pilot.....And of course....Peppey Leotard (AKA Bob Archer)....You asked...Thought it would be interesting to share !!

P.S. I was high jumping with Michael Chrichton at East Hills School when he broke his leg back in the 50's. I t was a summer Saturday . NOBODY was around. No cell phones. I carried him to Round Hill Road and hailed a passerby. We got to his house in Strathmore and his sister Kim called an ambulance (No 911)......
