Captain Phillips
At some point during the movie, I had to put the popcorn down because I was seasick. I think that means I liked the film.
I remember following the news when the Maersk Alabama was attacked by pirates in 2009 but there was so much more to the story depicted in the film than what I remember from the news at the time. (I know there is controversy about the accuracy of aspects of the film but for purposes of today’s blog, I am looking the other way.)
The performances were stellar. Tom Hanks, of course (I am a big fan), played an impressive Captain Phillips. But, the Somali actors from Minneapolis in their first ever performances, stole the show as the desperate pirates.
I highly recommend this film. Have you seen it?

My name is Joe Masalta. I am a Navy SEAL (1989 - 2005 active duty Navy with some broken service time and reserve time). Dec 1990 I graduated BUD/s and Feb 1991 I checked into SEAL Team One. Although I did not retire, I had a long career. Over the past decade I have worked as a Security Contractor for the U.S. State Department and private entities through various para-military companies.
For the past two years I have been providing maritime security for merchant ships against the Somalia Pirates. I am looking forward to seeing this movie for entertainment purposes. I am told across the board that Captain Phillips was an idiot and it is his fault that the pirates took him.
The discussion of my insights to the real events are too in depth for posting. The movie is based on real events and real facts from those events. That doesn't mean that everything is factual. Frankly, it would probably be boring if it was all factual.
Tom Hanks is awesome and no one can dispute that. I have a real life SEAL friend who worked on the movie. That is one of the major drivers for me wanting to see the movie.
Currently, I am aboard the Maersk Chicago. I will watch the movie when I return to the states.
