It's a Tradition

Here goes my annual tradition. I’m not a huge football fan but I watch the Super Bowl every year, mostly for the commercials (and the half time show). I tried to come up with my top five commercial list -- but I wound up with six. So here goes! My 2019 Superbowl most memorable commercial list in no particular order.

1. T Mobile: The multiple commercials with cute texting exchanges were clever. I particularly liked the one where a daughter is talking to her dad who is looking for an eggplant parmigiana recipe – but he thinks he is talking to Google and she just plays along.

2. NFL Commercial: Even I knew some of the participants. I suppose when someone yells “fumble!!” in a room full of football legends, pandemonium is bound to break out.

3. Bud Light and Game of Thrones: Frankly, I’m not a fan of either but when the two came together even I recognized great drama. Enough fun to make we want to start watching Game of Thrones. I’m still not interested in Bud Light but the joint marketing strategy was interesting.

4. Microsoft -- We All Win: It is so easy to think of Microsoft as technology, helpful albeit impersonal. This year’s ad brought humanity to technology showing us the difference that video games made in the life of a young disabled boy.

5. Washington Post -- Democracy Dies in Darkness: A big ad with a big message intended to reach a big audience. I am a fan.

6. Google -- 100 Billion Words are Translated Every Day: This ad was just touching. The kind that makes you smile. Did you know that the most translated words in the world are “How are you?”, “Thank You”, and “I Love You.” I didn’t but it made me smile to know.

Any commercials that stood out to you this year?

[And PS, thanks Rona!]

I liked the NFL anneversary you mentioned as did my 11 year old son, so I guess it hit a wide demographic.

Among the least memorable commercials of any Superbowl (and don't get me started about the half time show). But I did download the google translate ad right after the commercial aired, so -- according to my scientific poll of myself -- it was the most effective. Pretty cool that it can "live" translate text in a photo. Now all I need is a nice, long international vacation to try it out for real!
