Fifty-Eight Years

They were married fifty-eight years and his wife recently passed away. But, the workers at the local diner weren’t going to let this gentleman eat alone. Take it one step further – they weren’t going to let him be alone.

As he talked to one of the servers, she was asking questions about his wife and their life together. They had been very much in love it seemed. When she got sick, they flew all over the country looking for treatments. He was by her side the whole time.

Have I mentioned they were married fifty-eight years? He mentioned that at least a dozen times.

They kept him company through his whole meal, encouraging him to eat and lamenting that he was looking thin over the last few weeks. I’m pretty sure there was an extra dessert on his table that he didn’t ask for.

When dinner was over, he packed his things and left the restaurant, waving to his friends. “I’ll see you next week.” They smiled warmly and waved back.

Did I tell you they were married fifty-eight years?

It is stories like these that remind me of just how important community can be.

I would refer him to a local senior center perhaps not overtly but the one I chair well serves local residents.

George and Barbara Bush made it to 73 years. If you find the "right" person, you just keep sailing. Fred knows. So do I. And community is so important.

How do you know him Nancy? So important to be there for people. Hopefully he has other family as well.

Our local bar serves as a neighborhood pub. We are particularly attentive when someone has an illness or injury, has a parent, partner, or spouse die. We moved one guy from sitting with his wife in a booth every Sunday to sitting at the bar for dinner after she died. Side story: He was an olympic athlete in the 1970s-1980s. He is now grumpy but cute.

Judith Lieber passed away Saturday; hours before her husband of 72 years Gerson Lieber had also passed (NYT obits today). Both died of heart attacks at home. Perhaps the diner patron, even after 58 years married, might find another soulmate at the diner. At least it's comforting to know he has a community to support him, so he does not feel so alone.

Beautiful. So sad. I feel so lucky to be blessed with love and cherish it deeply while we have it. Thank you for sharing this.
