Revenge

Last Sunday, we attended New York’s Annual Gathering of Remembrance, in observance of Yom HaShoah Holocaust Remembrance Day. One of the speakers was a Holocaust survivor who, like my mother, speaks to school children about her life.

This woman took great pride in how, after surviving, she rebuilt her life and her family in the United States. The fact that she survived and prospered is her revenge for the atrocities she was subjected to.

(I have always felt that, as a child of survivors, I embody a certain aspect of my parents’ revenge for what they lived through.)

The survivor recounted a letter that she received from a student who had recently heard her speak. The student thanked her for the lesson learned.

“You taught me that you could have revenge without killing.”

A lesson well learned

Your Mother continues to daily inspire, her kindness after what she experienced changes the world.

Ben, great post. I look forward to hearing your mother speak this afternoon in Fairfield, CT. As you asked, I will give her a hug for you.

The importance of hearing Holocaust survivors' testimonies becomes so much more urgent as their numbers are rapidly dwindling. This child, who came from a country where the only response to revenge was killing, had her consciousness changed by the testimony of this heroic and uplifting survivor. Today is Yom Hashoah....hug a survivor if you can find one!

I will never forget Ester Geizhals talks to Gotham and the lessons and inspiration imparted. It’s hardly surprising that some part of that will to excel lives through you. Bearing witness to this human atrocity is essential to understanding and the future preservation of peace and human dignity. I hope these talkse are chronicled and digitally archived for posterity. Indeed, you are her greatest legacy.

As a nephew to thiose who did not survive, three uncles and their families (my father chose to get out in 1937) I carry the same resposnisiblity. I have never felt that responsibility more keenly than now, as Eastern Europes slides ever closer to the past, as right wing anti-semitic groups take hold in France, and Germany, and as the leaser of the Labour Party in England is an avowed anti-semite. Finally, our President's tacit and not so tacit support and admirartion of dictatrors and tyrants around the world created a toxic environemtn not only for Jews but fro all members of races and identity groups he regards as fair targets. Revenge forn the past and Fight against the present.

This survivor like you mom did much more but I do like the concept of just existing / carrying-on as an act of revenge.

I too, remember hearing Esther speak and I was moved beyond words. I will never forget her. Thank you Ben for sharing her with us. How does the saying go...living well is the best revenge.
