Late Fees and Interest

The other morning my day did not start well.  As I was scrolling through the early morning emails I came upon my credit card bill and I was shocked to learn my balance due was double my norm.

My first fear was that I had been hacked, but that was not the case.  The problem was that my payment of the previous month's balance had arrived late.  The due date was Sunday 1/15 and there was no mail the next day due to the Martin Luther King holiday.

Despite it being predawn, I immediately called them and as we live in a 24/7 world I was able to get through to someone quickly.

I did not ask where in the world I had reached, but the person I spoke to had an accent and the connection was less than optimal. I explained all of the above and added that in my 20 year relationship with the company I had never paid late.  He patiently listened and then told me, pursuant to new policy, he did not have the authority to waive the interest and considerable late fee.  With my blood pressure rising I considered my options and remembered to ask to speak to a Supervisor.

After a short interval of being on hold I was connected to a female supervisor who heard me through, plus my threat to use a different credit card in the future.

The connection was better and she had no accent and best of all she readily agreed to the waivers and thanked me for my continuing business.

There are lessons here and I hope you never need to utilize them.

You have hit one of my major pet peeves. The fact that bazillion dollar companies out source their customer service overseas. I have nothing against the people in India, or any of the other countries that they can pay a fraction of what they pay people here - BUT.... why don't they hire AMERICAN WORKERS. I find it despicable - and not just banks, Amazon,Spectrum,Apple and so many more.

You are right on. He had an Indian-English accent.

Good work. In theory I never need to worry about that. My banking situation might facilitate that. When SNAFU's resulted in past, I called, they fixed (aka waived.).

Why not pay your card bill electronically by going online to your credit card bank's website, allowing the card company to charge your checking account on the upcoming due date? You get a confirmation number and you are all set. No stamps, less carbon, and you are in control by setting this up yourself and not relying on the post office! My 2 cents as an electronic payment expert...

Agree with Judy and Dan. Up the ladder until you get what you want. The customer is always right. :)

Despite my unmerited reputation as a techno nerd I do all my due date banking that way and have the payment due dates in my google calendar just incase.

Whenever my husband has to make a call to a bank, credit card company etc. he requests a supervisor before he even tells them what the problem is. Works everytime

Cue: Twilight Zone music . Pre-Dawn phone call 9000 miles east and 11 time zones from Key West . The recipient in a call center the size of a phone booth being paid in Bangladeshi taka . Vot ? Ven ? Vayer ? So sorry Mr Klein ! The guy's having his curry and naan bread for dinner before your sun comes up . His sun is setting . Back to the future or something like that ? Sorry Brother I had a belly laugh over this in today's pre dawn . Of course my pre dawn and your predawn and the dusk of Banglasdesh take on wildly different forms . The visual had to be great . Me ? Online banking . Everybody gets $300 bucks on the first of the month whether they like it or not . Every month . That way I don't miss anybody and I can catch up on the 15 th . The lights stay on . DIRECTV stays happy . Verizon has no complaints . I don't use credit cards . I have a wad of dough in my pocket at all times nestled next to my Sig Sauer .45 semi auto . Of course I don't go out very much either . Mostly because I'm not invited . That you can understand right ?
