I tried it

As a follow to my blog last week about turning your technology off I decided to try it.

Yesterday I did not look at any emails or crack my computer till about 3 o'clock. I couldn't wait any longer...it was pulling me. I thought I had heard my phone say..."gotta check your email..." but I could be wrong.

When I did open my email in my iPhone I was inundated with about 300. Lovely. I scrolled quickly through to see if there were any emergencies or urgent messages. Thankfully there was only two. A correction to Fred's blog and a client that needed to speak with me. I wasn't until this morning that I sifted through them (in addition another 175 or so) and responded appropriately.

Without the continual checking yesterday, I did feel calmer...till about 2:30 when the pull started to happen. Maybe I'll try it again.

Did anybody else try it? Will you?

Unwillingly, I have been without my Blackberry for close to a week as it has just given up. The clock, the alarm and the phone still work. A replacement under warranty is on its' way. It is much calmer without it; however, I have responded much later to "urgent" requests. It seems that no one calls and leaves a message these days. Maybe I will be less vigilant when I am "back in business". It certainly is much easier and less wearing to type on the Mac.

After I commented on your blog last week-about not checking my work email on weekends-I checked my work email. As usual I regretted doing so. Not because it was something that couldn't wait until Monday but, because I felt that since I had read it, I had to respond. I am trying again this weekend. No wokr email from Friday at 6:00 p.m. until Monday morning.

Alan & I were on a cruise the week before last and the coverage was spotty - it drove us nuts!

We go away every Christmas and New Year's to Uruguay, where my mother-in-law has the excellent manners to have a beach house. Since it's South America, the seasons are reversed and Christmas at the beach is a very good thing. The house doesn't have internet service (on purpose), and everyone, including my "millennial" children, are unplugged. I happen to relish that time, and catch up on whatever "emergencies" arise when I get home.

I have a big proponent of setting limits with your clients in advance. In my initial client meetings, I tell clients that I return phone calls and emails within 24 hours. I also request that clients do not text me or call my cell phone during non-business hours. If they do, I simply do not respond. There are very few professions that deal with actual "emergencies" and accounting is, thankfully, not one of them.

I prefer to process mail and a lot can be disposed of quickly. I manage one account. I view reading email no different than reading my papers. My iPhone makes it easy to process.
