Sacred cows

A sacred cow is an idea, custom, or institution held, especially unreasonably, to be above criticism...a taboo. Essentialy something that people do not like to question.

Regardless of your political leanings, we are in an environment where it seems a lot of sacred cows are up for grabs.

Paris Agreements

NATO

Foreign trade

Government adminstration

Political correctness

Truth

It can be unsettling or not depending on your point of view. Are there others?

It seems like Truth is in the mind of the beholder these days.

In Vonnegut's brilliant novel Cat's Cradle, under the tenets of Bokononism, the official religion of the desperately impoverished people of the Island of San Lorenzo, all mankind-created institutions, incorporations, politico-sovereignities (Sacred Cows?) that do not involve meaningful human relationships are dismissed as meaningless, vacuous "Granfallons." As Bokonon himself counsels, "If you wish to study a Granfallon, just remove the skin of a toy balloon."

Never been a fan of sacred crows but nonetheless but always believe in the truth.

Real truth v. fake truth. These are scary times. I love the Vonnegut comment. Somehow he, and George Orwell, seem especially relevant these days.
