Coffee

When I was young I did not drink coffee.  I started mid life when I heard that elite runners and other athletes would load up on cups of coffee pre event or game to garner the supposed benefit of the interaction of caffeine upon glycogen.  I truly believe it is a legal performance enhancer and continue such use to this day.

Along the way I developed the enjoyable habit of nursing and sipping my sole cup of coffee through the day.  I get a little taste kick when I roll it on my tongue and I suppose you could say I'm addicted.

In preparing for this blog (which Joanne suggested) I did some research and learned there are many suggested and/or documented benefits engendered by caffeine ingestion.

Following are just some of the alleged coffee benefits:

It reduces risk of cancer, stroke, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, suicide and increases memory, stimulates hair growth, helps with asthma and increases sperm count.

I think I'm going to up my intake.

I drink many cups most days. I acquired a taste in the Spring of 1977 during my involvement in the 1977 mayoral race.

The last vice I have left - and I enjoy it to the fullest. I too can nurse a cup of coffee for several hours - room temperature is just fine with me.

Agree re room temperature

I too can nurse a cup for hours. As the weather gets warmer I often just add ice to the room temperature cup and finish it off iced.

To this day I have only had one cup.of coffee. Growing up my single mom could not start a day without two cups of coffee and a couple of cigarettes. Consequently, I avoided both.

Love it. A great mug of fresh ground Sumatra dark roast with cream is the most delicious way to start the day (well, one of them ;). I'm lucky to have a husband who indulges me! I drink 3 to 4 cups a day at most, but none as good as that 1st cup. :)

I'm with Ben. Moderation is the key.
The health risks of coffee are well documented.

Is it the coffee bean or the caffeine that provides the alleged benefits? If it's the caffeine, then a Coke (bad for the teeth) or dark chocolate should work as well or better. If it's the coffee bean, then decaf might avoid the alleged "health risks."

Joe, Dirt , Mud and Java. Been around it my whole life . The Navy couldn't exist without it . Either could airline pilots . The smell infused with frying bacon at zero dark thirty in the chow hall . Nostalgic . In the cockpit before a 0530 takeoff and a 12 hour flight to Hong Kong ahead of me . The coffee mug collection in the ready room . The thick Cuban coffee served at the open stand at the Oasis on Key Biscayne . The skipper of the Kitty Hawk in a blue baseball hat drinking from his personal blue cup in between puffs of his cigar on the bridge . Joe DiMaggio and Mr. Coffee . Coffee ice cream from Trader Joe's . A roll and butter on 34th street washed down with a cup of deli coffee . Tradition . Flavor . Nostalgia .

Some people can't sleep whe they drink coffee. With me it's the opposite, when I'm sleeping, i can't drink coffee.

In college and law school I was a tea drinker. When I started working I switched to coffee, to be like everyone else. During my six year hiatus from working outside the home, to be a stay at home mother, I was able to give up caffeine completely. My first day back at work I was right back onto the caffeine.

During the week, it's coffee from my Keurig. On the weekends we indulge by french pressing the most amazing coffee we discovered in Mexico and now order online.

So love these blogs, interesting to read the comments. Like apparently many others I nurse my coffee throughout the day and those around me know that they dare not touch that cup that sits on my desk, or attempt to get me a fresh cup. Interestingly caffeine at night actually puts me to sleep. The smell of a good cup of coffee is something that I truly love.
