Is There Armrest Etiquette?

Categories

Recently I sat in the middle seat on a cross county flight, between my husband who had the aisle seat and a stranger who had the widow seat. Several times during the flight the channel on the television I was watching unexpectedly changed. After the second time, I realized the channel changed because the stranger next to me had put his arm on the armrest where the television controls were located.

The third time the channel changed I told the person sitting next to me what had occurred and he profusely apologized. It happened twice more after that, which again led to prolific apologies. Which leads me to the question that came to me at that time; what is the use of armrests when you’re sitting in a row, especially when you’re sitting next to a stranger? He had a single armrest on his left and shared an armrest with me on his right.  To my right was an armrest I shared with my husband.

If you’re sitting in an airplane or in a theater what is the armrest etiquette? Who gets which armrest?

Certainly if that armrest in question controls your TV, its yours! I recall in grade six Mrs. Billet had a system to make sure each child had an armrest in the auditorium. Fred would not like it as it favored righties.

The armrest question is a tricky one. It might surprise some, but I make efforts to defer.

I agree with Corey if there are controls in the armrest. Otherwise, unfortunately, the bully gets the armrest.

I have the best solution. My wife and I each take an aisle seet next to each other.

The arm rest issue has been a long time one for me. My bigger question, why on earth do they put the controls for the TV/Audio right on "top" of the arm rest in the first place? Could you imagine if the controls in a car where affected by the drivers arm hitting them, how long that would last. Get those controls either on the end or inside of the arm rest or just place them on the screen itself. But I agree with Corey, arm rest with the controls on it belong to the person sitting in that seat. Just try to enforce it and we may end up getting more irate passengers with corresponding videos of people getting dragged off planes.
