Circus Memories

I am unsure whether what I am about to write is currently politically correct but I was very saddened to read about the closing of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. I have very vivid happy memories of going to the circus with my parents and then with my own children.

As a child I loved the clowns. But one of my most enduring memories of the circus is the small rectangular flashlight on a necklace that I asked my parents to buy me every year. While at the circus, as soon as the lights went down, you held the light by the necklace and spun it. All over Nassau Coliseum there were revolving flashes of light in the dark. Even after the show was over, I would sneakily use the flashlight at night for the month or two the batteries lasted, after lights were supposed to be out, to secretly read in my bed.

By the time I had children, the flashlight on a necklace was changed to a light stick.  Like me, my children loved the light sticks and I bought them a light stick every year. Also like me, they  loved the clowns. One of my most favorite memories with my children is when one of the clowns, came into the audience and choose my youngest daughter to go with him into the arena. The memory of her joy at that moment and the moment he gave her an animal balloon  is something I hope to always remember.

Do you have happy memories of Ringling Bros.?

Never that big on the circus. I enjoyed the smaller one ring of the early years of Big Apple Circus and took the kids there.

Yes, I remember the one time I went in 1976. They were promoting the smallest couple (talk about politically incorrect). I too remember getting the flashlight and spining it at MSG. The three rings were difficult to watch as it was so big, but I will miss it. I was a fan of the elephants and lions. Never got to take my son which I now regret.

How could you forget the flashlight. I loved the small car and all the clowns coming out and the trapeze. Little remembered fact: in the early 50s when the circus came to NY the Rangers could not play in the Garden and lost the Stanley Cup playing all 7 games on the road.

They sold those little pet alligators. After a while people flushed them down the toilet. Today there are thousands of grown alligators roaming the NYC sewers.

I never knew that. The clowns coming out of the car made my kids laugh every single time. It never got old.

I don't remember the alligators. Knowing my parents, they probably steered me away before I could even see them. LOL

I loved the circus and it is terrible that political correctness has caused the circus to close. Once they eliminated the elephants, the ticket sales went down and they couldn't stay open. I remember going in the 60's and taking my own children in the 80's and 90's. The elephants and lions and tigers, the clowns, the high wire, the trapeze - so many great memories!! We went to the circus for one last time and took our grandson and he sat there in awe but at 2, he will not remember..so sad.

Also, the Feld family, the owners, have been great to an organization I am involved with - the Community Mayors see: communitymayors.org - and they would put on a special circus every year and we would bring thousands of Children with Special Needs to view the circus.

Thanks to the Feld Family for all of the oy they brought to so many!!!
