Little Things

At Tuesday's meeting of the Long Island Women's Group, the guest speaker, Joshua Lafazan, told us how, as a high school student, he started an anti drunk driving program that provided safe and free rides to students to avoid driving while intoxicated or being a passenger. Three hundred and fifty rides were provided in 2016. This relatively small community-based campaign got me thinking about several small endeavors that could or would make a difference. Earlier in the meeting, Flo had talked about witnessing so many discarded plastic bags on a recent walk causing her to recommit to using reusable fabric bags. And I thought of my niece who lives in Haifa and sends her young children to an Arab-Israeli school where the Arab and Israeli children learn both languages and cultures in the hope of changing lives and, perhaps, more. Start small with seemingly little things.

Yes, it's the "small" everyday decisions that create our world and our lives. These examples give me hope.

I was taught that little things mean a lot. Like a pat on the head...

Indeed they do, as they say, baby steps. I carry one of Flo's fabric bags in my pocketbook at all times to ensure I never use plastic and remember being blown away when I saw a video on a school very similar to the one you describe Ben. When my kids were little they received "mitzvah stars" each time they remembered to recycle or do something good for the environment, a project started by their school. On Saturday, as adults, both will be marching in the science March, in two different cities-- those baby steps left a lasting impression.

Here is a link to some amazing kids. My son won this award last year. It is a prime example of little things that grow to make a difference.

It always starts with the little things, that are no so little. Joshua possibly could have saved lives....not so little, eh! I applaud him!
