So Much Worse Than Ma'am

Years ago I wrote a blog about the first time I was “Ma’amed”. Apparently, I have been promoted – not necessarily in a good way.

We recently vacationed in Florida. One day, a young family sat near us at the pool. They had two adorable girls – the youngest was probably three years old and the oldest no more than five. The youngest followed me around for most of the day. It was like I had a new friend. With my children so far away from those ages, I have to say it was fun for me.

At the end of the afternoon, however, it all changed. As this adorable young child was demonstrating to me her swimming techniques, she suddenly stopped to whisper something in her mom’s ear. Her mom smiled at me and said “She thinks you look just like her Grandma”. Grandma?? Really? The expression on my face must have spoken volumes because she tried to explain that grandma had curly hair and wore glasses too -- but the cat was out of the bag.

So much worse than Ma’am.

Noooooooo!!!!!!!!!!! I'm not sure how I would react if that happened to me; but it wouldn't be good.

I walked into a coffee shop and a five year old looked up at me and said, "Grampa." He was embarrassed when he realized his mistake. I said to him, "Let me shake your hand. You are the first person ever to call me grampa!" The place burst out in laughter. I can't wait to be a grampa! I'm 55, and I'm ready for it. It doesn't make me any older. It just means my kids have had kids, and I have more people to love.
