New Normal

We were sitting at the airport chatting and waiting for Jaclyn’s plane to land. Eric was busy playing a game on his phone. Just an ordinary afternoon in our house.

A man sat across from us with his luggage poised right next to his chair. When we turned a few minutes later though he was gone – but his luggage was left behind in the same spot. We watched for a bit not thinking much but after a while started to think about the warnings you hear all through the city about unattended packages.   It had been a long time.

Jaclyn’s plane was called and we stood to greet her but the traveler had not yet returned to his luggage. Bill approached an airport worker who offered no help or thoughts.

Just then the traveler reappeared, claimed his luggage and left. And the day returned to new normal.

We recently had a similar situation, luggage left by the terminal with no apparent owner. In our case, however, TSA was right on it, bringing the dogs etc. A few minutes after TSA got there the owner of the bag came running over. Apparently, he went to get food and just left the bag. I have to say TSA really let him have it and let him know that they take unattended luggage very seriously. It sounds like our situation was handled very differently than yours.

The motto is "if you see something, say something", so I am surprised that the airport worker didn't handle this more professionally.

Yeah. I got a shrug and "so what?" look last time I reported to a worker. Now I go straight to someone at a checkiin counter.

Frequent Flyer Tip: I don't report it to anyone at the gate I will leave from. I don't want to be targeted for a pat-down. I am too lumpy for that.

I too tend to notice these things and point them out to whoever appears to be in authority, Saw something recently at a museum. Sad but it has become necessary. Thus far all have been false alarms (very gratefully), and I have not made issues of them other than to quietly point them out.

You did good to be wary and report. Could've been person left his luggage in his plain view even if you could not view him.

We report these things all of the time, always to a cop. I have even reported things in the subway system
