Another Engagement

This week I am again thinking about engagements. Probably because my step-daughter, Danielle,  got engaged on Saturday. Once that happens it’s difficult to think about anything other than the engagement.

Danielle’s engagement led me to think about how couples meet. I met my husband, Philip, through our younger children, Ryan and Sydney. Ryan and Sydney attended nursery school together. As such, I knew his former wife, Randy, but I did not know him very well.  Randy died when Ryan was in third grade, thirteen years after being diagnosed with a brain tumor. Knowing that Philip worked Saturday mornings I offered to watch Ryan on Saturday mornings. While I was trying to do a good deed and help out a now single parent, I have to admit that it also was a help for me. Having Ryan over Saturday mornings kept Sydney occupied so I could get things done around the house.

As Philip and I like to say, over time Ryan and Sydney’s playdates extended into all day playdates which began to include us. Breakfast playdates for the children extended into lunch with their parents and eventually to dinner.  We now have been married almost twelve years and Ryan and Sydney are  brother and sister, and more importantly, best friends.

As Corey mentioned yesterday, two of our bloggers married their high school sweet hearts. How did you meet your significant other?

Congratulations to Danielle and Mike!!! We love you both very much.

congrats to the mom. As a stepson, we never differentiated.

Shelly baby sat (years earlier) for the couple that introduced us. They were leaders in the tenants association and I helped them politically, became friends with them, they joined my political club and I got the husband a job with the city. They lived across the street from Shelly and her folks. I met Shelly for a drink on May 10, 1984; first official date was the following Saturday to see "Leader of the Pack" at The Bottom Line. We got married the following March.
Riva Schwartz

Met Alan while I was in high school, he was a "college man". WE just celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary. Mazel Tov to Danielle!
Tessa Marquis

Blind Date. Meaning that I had to be hogtied and blindfolded.
I only agreed to it because it was a Peter Gabriel Concert. My aunt (who had a swiss-german-french-italian accent) called it "The Blinding Date".

6 and a half years of bliss, then married for the following 26.5 years so far. In other words next week is our 33rd anniversary.
Cayce Crown

Mutual friends at a group gathering. 29 years together at Thanksgiving. Married since Dec. 31.

So excited for all of you!!!! Such wonderful news!!!!! And you know this story -- bill and I met waiting to get into a Jewish singles party on Christmas Eve. We were married 13 months later.

I met Rick in Social Studies class in 11th grade! We were partnered to do a project together and then started dating. As typical 11th graders, our love story ended within weeks and we never spoke to each other again. Until 30 some-odd years later when we were both going through difficult divorces, we started "talking" on Facebook, I went to see his band play - and the rest is history. We've been together (again) for 5 years.
