A Rod's Last Game

Tonight is A Rod's last game. Or is it?

After 22 Big League seasons during which he struck 696 home runs while failing two performance enhancing drug tests Alex Rodriguez is a complicated, untruthful tarnished star with a still huge Yankee contract guaranteed through 2017.

In an emotional press conference last Sunday A Rod spoke the Yankee party line and "retired".  Based on his history I do not believe him.

My gut tells me we have not seen the last of him as an aging 41 year old player.

With the round number of 700 homers and the Babe's 714 out there calling to him how can he resist? Whether it's this year or next, he will find a new elixir and attempt to come back to the spot light.

In my opinion he is just not the type to play nice and go quietly.

It would be nice if he surprised me!

Fred:

I think you are being a little hard on him. While he is hardly one of my role models, he was truly one of the best players ever, even before the drug scandal. All this occurred during a time when cheating was rampant and only a few got caught.
There have been many players who claimed retirement and then turned around and came back. I agree, he want those four home runs. Let's see who wants hik.

I don't know very much about baseball - but A Rod does not strike me as some one who will "go quietly into that goodnight" He - like a politician on the current scene - he is addicted to the spotlight - and needs the attention .... good or bad.

I agree Fred. He's too selfish and egoistical to walk away being so close to those numbers...

This guy is the biggest phony on the planet, he will be pinch hitting for the Marlins in a month. Good riddance!

Did I just hear that he will be part of tonight's game but will not be playing?

I am confused---why he is held in high regard, when his performance was tainted by the use of illegal substances, giving him the upper hand.

I digress, he's easy on the eyes :)

I miss Jackie Robinson. Also easy on the eyes.

The most home runs by a player born in Washington Heights. It's no longer about him, but about what can he do to improve the world the rest of his life?

I see a comparison to someone else who was pushed out in August- Richard Nixon. He was in the news since he resigned on August 9. 1974. Nixon said he was not a crook and Alex claimed he did not cheat. Both were great talents in their professions, (Nixon probably won 3 Presidential elections and achieved peace with China) They were either Loved and Hated. No middle ground on either.

To me, AROD had one clutch stretch for the Yankees. 2009 Playoffs and World Series. Otherwise disappointing on and off the field.
Never to be forgotten is when Joe Torree batted him eighth in a playoff game.
Just for the entertainment value, I would like to see him keep playing. AROD lost
the privilege to go out gracefully!

I don't understand why he is doing this mid-season. Why isn't he waiting until the end?

This is so complicated and controversial . The New York Media market no less . The New York Yankees . George Steinbrenner. The New York Post . Madonna. Mickey Mantle, Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio , Jeter et al Arod was a great if not the greatest baseball player ever to put on a uniform . With that said a talented but flawed character . His shallow psyche combined with a pathological ability to lie at will .His ability to self destruct remains unparalleled . Yet tonight I have recorded the YES pregame and post game shows as well as the game . I participated in a Tweet thread about whether Girardi should start him at Third. Alex is carrying a HUGE emotional load of baggage . He has to be in such emotional pain . I actually hurt for him because somewhere inside is a human being cast adrift unceremoniously in a city , and a world that can be so cruel . He has a long road of redemption ahead for himself . What does he think to himself when he turns off the night table lamp at night . Or does he ?

The Yankees should have kept him playing the rest of the year. What a great draw to see history (possibly) being made!

Because the Yankees feel he is finished now as a player, eg, .197 batting average.

Let Alex do what is best for him; Yankees made their own judgment about what works best for their organization and team.
