My Kindle

About eighteen months ago I was contemplating whether to buy my first Kindle. As an avid reader I wondered whether I could give up physically reading books. As such, I wrote a blog asking for opinions. Here’s my follow-up.

I love my Kindle. I love the ease of being able to bring numerous books with me anywhere I go. I also love the ability to be able to purchase a book and have it available for reading an instant later. I even purchased a “funky” cover for my Kindle that adds my own personal touch to it.

Interestingly I have unexpectedly found that, not physically seeing the book prior to its purchase, has led me to read books I may not otherwise have chosen to read. For instance, I thoroughly enjoyed “The Goldfinch.”  After finishing it on my Kindle I happened to come across a hard copy of the book. I was shocked at the book’s length and wondered whether I would have chosen to read it had I known beforehand the voluminous length of the book.

The only negative about my Kindle is the  residual guilt I feel because  I really no longer frequent bookstores, except for an occasional cookbook.  Having been a big supporter of small and local bookstores, their loss is my only regret about my Kindle purchase.

Are you a Kindle or ebook reader?

I have an iPad and have purchased 150+ books so far. In addition, I also purchase Audible books so I can read and listen at the same time - for non-fiction, my comprehension is much improved and it accelerates my speed. The best part of reading Kindle books is the ability to sample them prior to purchase - I do it all the time. Great blog! - Rich

I've had a Kindle for many years now - it's great for reading The NY Times on the subway. For years, like every New Yorker I had my own way of folding the Times on the subway - the Kindle solves that problem. While traveling it makes it easy to read the paper abroad and carry a few books without the extra weight. For books in general I vacillate between eBooks and real paper. The convenience of the Kindle doesn't out weigh the allure of having an actual book in hand.

Lately I have notice a discernible trend of people reading print books on the subway....I enjoy seeing what people are reading - have had some wonderful conversations sparked by commenting on a book someone was holding, so I am aware of people reading books...there is a decisive return to physical books this summer!
