Happy Birthday Dad!!

My Dad’s birthday was June 18, which usually fell on or about Father’s Day. This year it fell the day before Father's Day. A few days later, I went out to dinner with a friend and we spent a lot of time reminiscing about our fathers. It was amusing to hear that both of our fathers had interesting stories about their past. Here’s my favorite one about my Dad:

As a young man, my Dad used to hang around the clubs of New York City hoping to get a job as a free lance photographer.  While walking down the street one evening, he was flabbergasted to see Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz coming towards him. As they walked by him, he struggled to find words to say hello. As he did, he flailed his long arms and, unintentionally, pushed Lucille Ball down a flight of stairs into the storage basement of the building.

My Dad quickly ran down after her and Desi Arnaz ran after him. She was unhurt but she did have to pull Desi Arnaz off my Dad and convince Desi that my Dad’s act was not intentional but, rather, the result of clumsiness. After that, they would see my Dad often around the clubs and Ms. Ball even had a nickname for him, “Arms.”

After I recounted this story, my friend told me one of her favorites about her father.  We both then realized that most families probably have their own “gems.”  So, in honor of my Dad, who loved to share his stories, I invite you to share one of yours here. What is one of your families’ favorite anecdotes?

My father motivated me not to be a "Bum".

Volunteer & always tried to lead by action not words. He also let me be me and not some ideal of who he wanted as a son.

My Dad's birthday is June 10. I was born on Father's Day. So the week would be a celebration regardless which Father's Day always fell around the same time. My father had this amazing tenor voice. He would break out into song and loved to sing along with Mario Lanza. We had our own little things that were uniquely ours. Our special language for one. Catch the spider, a simple game with his fingers that he passed onto my daughter. The way he would mediate arguments between my mother and myself with his charm. He was a very charming man.

I remember him taking me to work with him to Yonkers I believe. We went to an ice cream shop in the area. He bought me a stuff animal too. We did that a couple of times when I was a kid. So when ever he would go to that client after wards he would bring home a stuffed animal for me. One of them was a bull that was 1/2 my size when I was 10. I was 5' then. The little things are what stick.

My father was universally acknowledged as "the Nicest Man in the World" . I, however, am my mother's daughter!

My father was not only a Marine Colonel, but Associate Editor of the Atlanta Journal where he wrote a daily column. One of my favorites was the one where told of being able to have a mustache in 1936 at the exact same high school where my brother was threatened with expulsion if he didn't shave his off in 1970. Oh Georgia, so silly. My Dad was a rare breed.
