Resources

Last week, a colleague called to ask me a question. It didn’t have anything to do with work. She had a need and was trying to figure out how to go about filling it. So she called me – and paid me the most extreme compliment. “I thought of you because you know everyone”, she said.

I paused, flattered that that was her vision of me.

But then I started thinking. I don’t really know everyone, but I do know a lot of really fantastic people. And I owe so much of that reach to networking and Gotham.

This conversation brought home the networking lesson to me. Networking is as much about building a deep net of resources as it is about building your business.

And, in the end I was able to help this colleague make the connection she was looking for. All through Gotham.

I must admit I have not become as enmeshed in Gotham as those who initially told me about the group are--not because I have not truly enjoyed each and every one of the people I have met within the group, just because of other tugs on my time. I did, however, personally learn the power and "magic" of Gotham last week when I reached out when my daughter potentially lost a sublease just days before she was about to begin her summer internship. Total strangers (and one very old friend) reached out to assist---amazing! We were very grateful at the emails received. For the moment she is working things out, however it was so lovely to know that there were so many willing to extend a helping hand. Although I am fortunate to have built a very supportive group of colleagues and friends over the past several decades, I am delighted to have now been introduced to Gotham, a special group of people.
