The chip

In the film Star Trek Generations, Data, the andriod, installs the emotion chip he retrieved from Lore, his brother, and experiences the full scope of emotions. However, those emotions were difficult to control and Data struggled to master them.

In several scenes, Data experiences laughter, sadness and outright fear and terror. In one partiular scene Data is huddled in a corner in total fear because of the phaser battle that is taking place. The Captain, Jean-Luc Picard, implores Data to overcome his fear and lets him know that he feels the same way. Data can't and is stuck. Piccard suggests he turn off his emotional chip for now and help him deal with the situation. In a classic head jerk manuver he does and dutifully stands up and subdues the attacker.

There are a lot of people who would love that option. I've often wondered what would it be like to be able to do that. There were a couple of times last year where that skill might have come in handy.

If you could...would you turn off your chip?

That would definitely be useful at times. Though, often I wish I could turn off my overly rational side and just go with my emotions.

Love Star Trek blogs!!!!!!!

Given what I do, many times I have to use Data's chip and turn myself off. It's very difficult though. That's why they invented wine.

I use to use Data's chip a lot, masking and hiding my emotions. Now I am embracing them and exploring them, and they aren't leading me down a dark path, instead I usually am in the sunlight.

No chip turn off for me. That chip is giving me valuable information that I can learn and grow from. Data had no experience to draw from, I do.

Would I turn off that chip...hmmmm....as I get older I cherish the moments I "feel" good or bad---I'm here and life is good.

Glad you are here too!
