Today is Yom Ha’Shoah - Holocaust Remebrance Day, which commemorates the lives and heroism of those who perished in the Holocaust. I would be remiss to let the day go by without the appropriate recognition.
Last Sunday, we attended the annual commemoration held at Temple Emanu-El in New York. My mother was invited to give the remarks reserved for a Holocaust survivor. Unfortunately, she was not feeling well and was not able to attend. My sister did a remarkable job in conveying my mother’s thoughts.
My mother was not the only one who was missed that day. Every year fewer of the survivors are present. Every year there are fewer women to light each of thirty-six memorial candles. Friends of my parents, who I was accustomed to seeing, are no longer there.
I had prayed for a very special day. My vision was that there would be four generations -- from my mother to her great-grandson -- in the sanctuary at Temple Emanu-El. It was not to be.
The recognition of the inevitability of the passage of time and its natural consequences does not make acceptance any easier.

I have not had the honor of meeting your mother, from comments I have read she is indeed a remarkable woman. I read and re-read what you wrote, and to me, there were indeed four generations in the temple last Sunday.

I was fortunate to have attended on Sunday, courtesy of Ben. That day proved to be very special for me as well as my mom would've been 87 on that day, she too was a Holocaust Survivor. Her journey proved to be very similar to Ben's mother as her childhood was stolen from her at the ripe old age of 10, spending many years in different concentration camps until she was able to be fortunate to get into Schindler's camp at the end. The whole afternoon was very touching and heartfelt. I, too, have been very close to my mother and am grateful that she was able to relish in her four grandchildren. I am very happy for that as she clearly was not intended to survive. She never met my now 10 month old grandson but he will certainly learn all about her incredible strength and courage.
Ben, perhaps next year you will be able to relish in your vision. I hope your dreams come true.
Thanks again for letting me hear her incredible story of triumph over tragedy!

Your mom attended in spirit and think about it if you facetimed the event to here she would indeed be present in fact.
