Build a heart

Dr. Francisco Fernandez-Aviles working at London's Royal Free Hospital has been building replacement parts for human bodies. So far he's "installed" 5 windpipes.

A Dr. Seifalian made tear ducts and an artery that are now living inside of people. He's made a nose he intends to use...on a patient who lost his to cancer. And as part of a clinical trial, he plans to transplant a coronary artery into a person later this year.

What's interesting is that the recipient doesn't need anti rejection drugs because the parts are built with the patient's own cells. These sci-fi doctors are able to do this because of stem cells.

And I just thought they had gotten hold of a replicator from Star Trek.

Science fiction as usual predicts science; imagination begets invention. The power of thought, not to mention some free-thinking (thinking of those opposed to stem cell research).

I read that article in the Times, and blown away by what they're able to do these days.
