“In a World Where You Can Be Anything, Be Kind”

I really like this quote. OK, I admit it showed up on my Facebook feed, but I still really like it.

Kindness doesn’t always show itself in our world. Business people negotiating hard on opposite sides, litigants in a bitter dispute, even just a disagreement amongst friends.

But, being kind is a choice. Every day. And I am happy to say I had a great role model.

My mother used to work in the city and she commuted in and out of Penn Station. One day, my father met her in the city and they were coming home together. When their train was announced, he tried to direct her to the closest stairway to descend to the track level but she insisted on taking a different stairway at the back of the train. My dad came to learn that every day of her commute, my mother met an older man at the top of the stairs and helped him get down to the train because he had trouble with the stairs. I am reasonably sure that she didn’t even know his name. But he needed her help and her kindness and she gave it willingly.

Can you share a story of kindness?

A beautiful story. My Mom was similar. When I went to law school, I used to walk from Penn Station to Fordham, at 62nd and Columbus. During my walk, I would always encounter the same homeless man. I told my Mom about it and told her that, one day, I gave him a dollar. The next day she handed me a sandwich and apple to give to him and did so for every day thereafter. He looked for me everyday and thanked me profusely when I offered him the bag of food. I brought my Mom's sandwich for months and it only stopped when he was no longer at that corner.

Nancy, Rona, stories like these are what make the stories we are hearing on the news lately a bit easier to take, knowing that there are truly wonderful people doing remarkable things every day--little things that make a huge difference in someone's life, not for any glory, but just because. I was also fortunate to have been raised by a kind, giving, and most importantly non judgemental person.

Fred Klein invited me to participate in that thing called Gotham Networking.

At the post office, I always hold the doors open for folks, especially of a certain age. A few summers back, the car in front of we existing westbound off the LIE to the GCP was cut off badly (somehow I anticipated and slowed down) and crashed. I pulled over, called 911 and waited until Ambulance arrived. (Then I continue on to pick up fellow Poconut Claudia, double back to get Shelly and head over to Great Neck where Poco was playing a free concert (to Village residents and guests of the band) in Great Neck on the Sound.

What a nice story. If more people practiced just a bit of kindness every day, I'm believe the world would be a much better place. All we need to do is look for the opportunities.

Beautiful. (Marilyn, so true about countering what is in the news. Love that). When people ask me "how to network" I always say: start by being kind and curious.
