Chicken Chow Mein

In a not surprising move, Congress is fighting the Obama adminstration to keep selling pizza and french fries in school. Now I'm not here to debate whether we should or should not. I'll leave that to the politics list or feel free to debate it in the comments below.

What it did remind me of is the school lunches I remember as a kid in Great Neck South. Tuesday's were chicken chow mein. Who knows what they piled up on our plates. Very few of us ate it although I did have it from time to time. It was a big gooey pile of green with what looked like chicken strips over some rice. Really filling...

When I got to College, the food I remember most is ice cream. I got to serve myself all the ice cream I wanted :) They had a beautiful shiny silver self serve soft ice cream machine. I learned the art of making those twisty cones with chocolate and vanilla.

What do you remember?

I used to like Chow Mein on the Friars menu.

I remember the first time I had a cheeseburger was freshman year in college. Meat and cheese wasn't allowed on the same plate at my house growing up!

I liked the fish sticks in high school with mashed potates. No wonder I had a weight problem. I spent the summer of my junior year in high school at Cornell. The BEST ice cream!

What happened, Fred? You gave up Chicken Chow Mein? I remember finding out that the college cafeteria put bread in the tuna fish salad to stretch it...

I remember when the price of a "Nutty Buddy" ice cream cone went from ten to twelve cents when I was in the third or fourth grade. College food was truly awful-- of the "gag me with a spoon" variety. When I finally moved off campus, I taught myself to cook.
