Like Fred, I listen. Most important thing, for me, is to let them get their stories out.

Always listen. No matter how difficult a problem may be, if you take the time to listen, you have already calmed the situation and allowed for the person to see you care. Then act by following up to ensure the situation (good or bad) was addressed.

My business is very personal so I know the people I deal with and like them. We connect even when there is no business to be done. A card not at the holidays or a random phone call always helps.

Look them in the eyes. Even when on a Zoom. And try it when you are on the phone! Your imagiNATION may help!

Plus, don't be afraid of their emotions. If they are upset, allow yourself to be more than sympathetic, be Empathetic.
Extra Credit: Hold back on your response/solutions. There will be ample time for that step.

Listening and thought provoking questions is an art form. I always inquire about them as people and family and just listen. Males it easier to plan woth clients when you know their family dynamics.

It’s always about them anyway, so why not ask and care and discuss what’s important to them.

It's easier to understand them if you take the time to learn about their world and the context surrounding their issues - then you become an informed listener - people notice and begin to trust you because they can tall that you took the time to prepare to listen.
