Soundtracks

Have you ever listened to the soundtrack to a movie without the movie?
We had the privilege of being at Tanglewood last Saturday for John Williams’ Film Night with the Boston Pops.
As I listened to the music, my daughter’s words of so many years ago resonated. She was about five years old when she said “You know Dad, Music goes right to your heart.”
Some of the music was accompanied by screening of the movies. And, for me, the music went to the background. Perhaps, that’s what I’m used to. The visual took precedence regardless of how powerful the music is.
When the screen retracted and there was only music, I was transformed. My mind saw the motion that would have been on the screen. Not from memory of the scenes, but from the heart. The music became the camera.
And the special privilege was watching John Williams conduct the second half of the concert.

Being a Star Trek fan, I realized I underappreciated the music in the original series and the various spinoffs until I attended a Philharmonic concert playing musical pieces from the shows; I was so taken aback by the quality of the sound tracks that I've become a fan of movie soundtracks!

I agree, music goes directly to the heart. I live in the world of music!
