Top Ten Work Tactics

Categories
Lifestyle

I was recently asked for advice by someone who is transitioning from school to the work force.  The following are my Top Ten Work Tactics which I shared with her:

1) Show up! Every day. No sick days. Be someone to rely upon.
2) Prepare, no, over prepare! Be ready for any contingency.
3) Work hard, real hard! They may be smarter, but they can be out worked.
4) Be personable and latch on to a mentor!
5) Be persistent! Never quit!
6) Learn from your mistakes! Never make the same mistake twice.
7) Ask questions! You never know unless you do.
8) Socialize out of work and build bonds!
9) Be competitive, but don’t appear so!
10) Try to find sustenance in your work!

I never really thought about it and I appreciate the question!

PS Be creative!

I would add: Enthusiasm, great attitude (meaning, no complaining, no office drama, no talking about other people) and build your networks, in addition to the above. All excellent advice!

Tick done - all of the above. And now I am enjoying the fruits of my labors

An important lesson presented well by Simon Sinek (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4ZoJKF_VuA) is "start with why". Why are you doing what you do ... here starting this new job ... it brings into question one's intentions and goals; it's 'a question about leadership and action. "Why" may seem obvious to a recent college graduate ... yet seeking to understand 'why' is reflective, building inner knowledge, resolve and confidence.

Agreed all are extremely valuable tips. However, part of #1 may need some new consideration. In "20 & "21 going to the work place sick could kill

Great list...to which I would add (for possible inclusion or enhancement), 1) Humility. Be coachable. Thank others often for their support. Be a team player. 2) To Shelley's enthusiasm I would further add, "Never miss an opportunity to make someone feel ten feet tall" even if it wasn't your idea. 3) Never stop asking yourself, "How can this be improvee? and..."What's missing?". 4) Know when silence is golden. Knowing what not to say is as impt. as knowing what to say.

Maybe the beginning of a cheat sheet/rules of the road for maximizing one's Gotham membership?
