It's Definitely Listening

I have written about this subject before. A new event occurred that I found so unnerving that I had to write about it again.

My step-son recently got engaged.  Right after the engagement, on that Saturday night, both immediate families met for dinner. The next day, Sunday, my step-son planned a party at a local pub for their entire families and their friends.

During the dinner Saturday night, I asked my future daughter-in-law what she planned on wearing for the Sunday festivities. She described the dress, including the brand. We both, for about five minutes, discussed the dress she planned on, and did wear, on Sunday as well as the brand of the dress. It was a very short conversation.

The weekend was an exciting whirlwind. That Monday, I sat down at my desk at work, and opened my Facebook page. There, in a targeted advertisement, was the dress that my future daughter-in-law wore on Sunday. I looked at the ad in shock. I never searched the dress, nor had I posted any pictures of her in the dress. Yet the opportunity to buy the exact same dress was staring at me on my Facebook screen.

Is my phone listening?? You tell me.

For some reason I "lost" the Verizon network this morning. I had to turn the phone off and on again during my drive to work. It was so weird. I had to drive in complete silence, no talking, no music. Don't remember the last time that happened.

Yes, all connected devices with a microphone are listening. More often, it's Google or Alexa, as their mics are designed to pick up commands from a distance away.
